The University of Portsmouth is hosting a winter Indoor Softball League this year, featuring five teams of players connected to the Solent Softball League.

The league began on November 5 and will run through December 3, with games played from 2.00-4.00 pm on Saturdays.

The five competitors are Solent League teams UPSU Shafters, Hursley Hurricanes and Baffins Brewers, plus the  Chichester Falcons (who hope to enter the league next year and are playing their first-ever competitive games) and the Waterlooville Wolverines, a league composite team.

Run penalty

The league has introduced a run penalty rule this year to allow games to be played ever if teams don't have an equal number of male and female players.

If a team plays with an uneven number of men and women, they take a run penalty for each imbalance per inning. For example, if a team plays with five men and three women they take a two-run penalty per inning or if a team has three men and four women they take a one-run
penalty per inning.
