The Leicester Blue Sox Baseball Club and Leicester Royals Softball Club are combining to hold "Come and Try" softball sessions for 10 weeks starting on Sunday, October 16 at Beauchamp College in Oadby.
The programme is intended to attract more people to the sport -- especially women. But anyone aged 12 or over is more than welcome to attend.
This exciting sporting opportunity has been made possible by a £2,700 grant from Sport England, which is working with local communities to get more people playing more sport.
Joint project
Matthew Crawshaw, Sporting Director at Leicester Blue Sox, said: “Leicester Royals are already an established softball club with two teams in the East Midlands League and the Blue Sox are keen to broaden our existing baseball membership by setting up our own softball team.
"Our joint project will help us reach even more people in Leicester," Matthew added, "giving them the opportunity to learn and play softball competitively. We're delighted to have received Lottery funding to make it all happen."
Crawshaw has invited his counterpart managers from other baseball clubs to get in touch if they need advice about applying for grant funding or want to discuss best practise in funding applications.
Sport England investment
The Sport England Small Grants programme invests National Lottery funding in projects that will grow and sustain participation in grassroots sport and create opportunities for people to excel at their chosen sport.
Anne Rippon, Sport England’s Regional Lead Officer for the East Midlands said: “The opportunity to try a new sport for the first time is often all a person needs to catch the sporting bug. The Leicester Softball Project is a great way for people to try softball and have a quality sporting experience that will encourage them to stay involved.”

The Leicester Softball "Come and Try" sessions will be held every Sunday between October 16 and December 18 from 12.00-2.00 pm at the Beauchamp College Sports Hall, Ridge Way, Oadby, Leicester LE2 5TP.
