The session welcomed over ten participants, all keen to step into the vital role of umpiring and contribute to elevating the standard of domestic fastpitch games across the country. The course was thoughtfully designed to provide a comprehensive introduction to the role, combining theoretical knowledge with practical experience.
The theory segment delved into key aspects of umpiring, including rules interpretation, positioning, mechanics, and effective communication on the field. Participants were guided through nuanced scenarios that often arise during games, equipping them with the confidence to make accurate and fair decisions under pressure.
Following the classroom-based training, participants had the unique opportunity to put their newfound knowledge into practice during a live women's league game. Under the mentorship of Bridget, while Jana was plate umpire, they gained hands-on experience, learning how to handle real-game situations while maintaining the flow and integrity of the game.
This inaugural course not only showcased the dedication of the organisers and participants but also marked an important step forward for the development of fastpitch softball in Great Britain. By investing in the education and growth of umpires, the British softball community is strengthening the foundation for fair, competitive, and enjoyable gameplay, ensuring a bright future for the sport.
The plan is to host another introductory session at a future GBFL date, which will continue to develop in its structure to create pathways for umpires to support at international tournaments.
