Long-time GB Slowpitch Assistant Coach Mike Ashley has called time on his role with the programme after being involved for more than 20 years.
Mike began his involvement with GB Slowpitch as a player in the late 1990s and played in the first-ever European Slowpitch Championship in 1998. He has been an Assistant Coach with the team for most of the time since he retired as a player, most recently under Head Coach Stephen Patterson.
“Mike was a terrific asset to all things GB,” said Patterson to his players at a recent training session. “At the time I took over the GB programme, Mike volunteered his support and wisdom, and I was quick to take it. You don’t know how valuable it is to have someone with game intelligence whispering in your ear. It’s what I asked for from him and he delivered every time.”
The coaches and players at the session offered Mike a well-deserved round of applause, albeit in his absence. Mike has been unable to travel with the team recently due to personal commitments.
Team Manager Kellie Whitaker said, “I’m confident that Mike will still be contributing in some way. He loves this game and he loves GB.”
