After a loss to the United States in their first playoff game on Saturday 18 November at the WBSC Slowpitch World Cup in Plant City, Florida, and then a win over Bulgaria, the GB Slowpitch Team will have to beat Canada on Sunday morning to remain in the competition.

GB had a tough 17-14 win over Canada during pool play – but even if the British can beat the Canadians again on Sunday, it will still be a long road, and possibly three more games, to win the gold medal.

GB finished top of the pool after round-robin games were played on Thursday and Friday, losing only to the United States and gaining a bye for the first round of playoff games.  But a 21-5 loss to the Americans when the second playoff round began on Saturday put GB on the brink of elimination, and it took a 14-8 win over Bulgaria on Saturday evening to ensure that GB would still be playing on Sunday.

Curacao, Bulgaria and the Turks & Caicos Islands were the three teams who are out of the competition following Saturday’s results.

Page Playoff

The four teams still standing – USA, Bahamas, GB and Canada – will now play a final Page Playoff on Sunday to determine the top four places.  But there will be a twist at the end.

The Bahamas and the USA will face off in the 1 v 2 Page Playoff game at 9.30 am on Sunday Florida time.  The winner will go forward to the final; the loser will have one more chance.

This will be followed by GB v Canada in the 3 v 4 game at 11.30 am in Florida.  The loser will be done and will finish fourth, but the winner will play the loser of the 1 v 2 game, and the winner of that game will also reach the final, with the loser taking the bronze medal.

The twist is that the final will have – if necessary – an “if game”.  So if, for example, GB and USA reach the final and GB wins, the USA’s earlier playoff win against GB will count, the “series” will be tied 1-1, and one more game will be necessary.  You can extend this scenario for any combination of teams that reach the gold medal game.
