With many people hoping for some kind of organised softball play in 2020 as the incidence of Covid-19 recedes, the British Softball Federation has clarified the position on insurance.

Civil and Public Liability Insurance

The BSF had already paid for Civil and Public Liability Insurance for 2020 before the pandemic began, and this insurance will be valid for teams that were affiliated members in 2019 as long as:

  • All players strictly follow whatever government regulations are in place at the time that game play or training takes place.

  • All players adhere to sport-specific advice issued by a competent body such as BaseballSoftballUK, the BSF or Sport England.

Under these conditions, insurance cover will be in place as normal.

Personal Accident and Injury Insurance

The BSF had also paid for optional Personal Accident and Injury Insurance for 2020 before the pandemic began for a number of teams based on take-up in recent years.  Therefore, teams in any leagues that purchased this insurance in 2019 will be covered for softball activity in 2020.

The policy does not cover Covid-19, but all normal coverage will be in place provided that, as with the BSF’s Civil and Public Liability Insurance, government regulations and sport-specific recommendations are followed.

Leagues, teams and players should note that disregard of government regulations and sport-specific recommendations will invalidate any claim under either policy.
