A Charity Softball Tournament will be held on Saturday, 28 April from 10.00 am-6.00 pm at Hallfield School Playing Fields in Edgbaston, Birmingham to raise money for the Birmingham Children's Hospital.  The grounds are next to the Birmingham Botanical Gardens, about 2km from the city centre.

The tournament will be run by the Birmingham Bobcats Softball Club, and will be open to all local sports clubs in the Edgbaston area, including hockey, rugby, netball, ice hockey, judo, cricket, golf, tennis clubs etc.  These clubs will submit a team of male and female players over the age of 14, and the Bobcats will organise them into a softball team on the day.

Individual players from the softball community in Birmingham or elsewhere are welcome to come along and take part.Birmingham Bobcats in Action

Each player who takes part in the tournament will pay £10, all of which will go to Birmingham Children's Hospital.

While equal amounts of male and female players on each team would be desirable, this is a fun tournament and no one will worry too much about ratios!

Schedule of events

The event will begin at 10.00 am with a ceremony conducted by the Birmingham Children's Hospital drama group and Hallfield School.  Then the Bobcats will run an “Introduction to Softball” session, and with teams having been organised, play will begin around 10.45 am.

Games should finish around 5.00 pm, followed by an Awards Ceremony.

All equipment will be provided for the teams and First Aiders will be on hand throughout the day, but there will be no food available at the ground, so participants are urged to bring a picnic lunch.

More money

In addition to the £10 entry fees, the Bobcats hope to raise more money for the Birmingham Children's Hospital by encouraging friends and family members to sponsor players.  Sponsorship can be donated directly to the hospital on this link: http://www.justgiving.com/birminghambobcats2012.

Busy start

Meanwhile, apart from planning for this charity event, the Birmingham Bobcats have had a busy start to the season.

On 1 April, the team won the Recreational section at the East Midlands Firstball Tournament, after coming second to last in the same competition last year.

On the weekend of 14-15 April, the Bobcats entered their first Competitive event at the Manchester Firstball, and came a very creditable sixth out of eight teams.

At the end of May, the Bobcats will be heading to Cologne in Germany for a slowpitch tournament involving German and Dutch teams.
