GB Men keep World Championship dreams alive

Victories by Great Britain over the Czech Republic in men's fastpitch softball are about as rare as Willy Wonka's golden tickets. But the GB Men's Team broke the spell and came up with a huge 7-4 win over the Czechs on March 6 at the ISF World Championships in New Zealand, to keep their hopes of reaching the playoffs alive.

A two-run inside-the-park home run by right fielder Kenny Pregnell in the bottom of the fifth inning and a two-hit shutout thrown by pitcher James Darby kept Great Britain's playoff hopes alive at the ISF Men's Fastpitch World Championships on March 5 with a 2-0 win over South Africa.

Great Britain's first win at the ISF Men's Fastpitch World Championships turned out to be easy: a four-inning 10-0 mercy rule rout of Indonesia on Monday morning, March 4 in Auckland. For GB, it was the start of what they hope will be a climb back towards the playoff places.

Playing the defending champions Australia was never going to be a game that the GB Men's Fastpitch Team was likely to win, and after scoring six times in the second inning, the Australians coasted to a 7-0 five-inning mercy rule victory that left GB still winless in the World Championships.

East Midlands League votes for mandatory helmets

The East Midlands Softball League has become the first slowpitch league in the UK to vote that all players must wear helmets when batting or baserunning. This policy will come into effect for the 2013 season.

New GB Men out-slug the old guys

The 2013 GB Men's Fastpitch Team took on past members of the GB Team on 27 February in Auckland -- including a handful of players (Steve Jackson, Steve Tau, Clive Evan, Roger Marshman) from the team that played at ISF World Championships when they were last held in New Zealand in 2004 in Christchurch -- and the new team came out on top.

GB Men work their way towards Auckland

The GB Men's Fastpitch Team assembled in Sydney on February 20 and 21 for training and warm-up games in Australia, then moved on to Auckland, New Zealand on February 25 for more training and games before they open the ISF Men's Fastpitch World Championships on Friday morning, March 1 at 9.30 am (8.30 pm on Thursday evening British time) with a game against Samoa.
