Leeds Detonators win gold in the sunshine at North West Series 2

Tue 3 Jul 2018

Nine teams gathered on Saturday 30 June to compete in the second of three North West Series one-day co-ed slowpitch tournaments in Manchester.

With not a cloud in the sky and the sun pumping out rays, it was set to be the hottest tournament of the season so far in the region.

The teams played six games each in the sunshine, starting with four round-robin games, followed by a split into Gold, Silver and Bronze groups for playoffs.

Of the five Leeds teams competing, Detonators, Bobcats and Dynamite made the Gold group, with Yorkshire Dales winning the Silver trophy.  Rookie team Yorkshire Hippos made their tournament debut and secured their first-ever win.

But it was North West Series veterans Detonators who racked up six wins, leaving them undefeated on the day and topping the table, though still second in the overall Series.

Captains were rewarded with an extra special bottle of North West Series beer as a thank you for attending.

In the 2017 Series, players were given exclusive North West Series key-ring bottle openers, but this year organisers upped their freebie game, offering a free pair of North West Series sunglasses with every raffle ticket, which proved very popular under Manchester’s blazing sun.

BSUK North West Coach Linni Mitchell said, “I love that our tournaments are a great stepping stone for new teams to get some game time and bond as a team on and off the diamond.  As usual, we are really grateful to our umpires and captains for helping the day to run smoothly, especially in the heat this weekend.  And a special mention to our scoring correspondent, Adam Scott, for keeping on top of the leaderboard all day.”

Luis Arrevillagas, BSUK’s North West Development Manager, said, “Thank you also to our resident photographer David Grice and to Gemma Wallace, who baked cupcakes for all of our group winners.  We had great weather, which is always a bonus for tournamentsand we’re glad that the sunglasses went down so well among the teams; we like giving them something a little extra and special.

“If you want to get your hands on a pair,” Luis added, “Linni and I will be selling them for £3 for the rest of the season, so get in touch if you want to sport a pair in your upcoming games!”

Final tournament standings were:

1 – Detonators (Gold winner)
2 – Bobcats
3 – Dynamite
4 – Yorkshire Dales (Silver winner)
5 – Tigers
6 – Freeze
7 – Rippers (Bronze winner)
