Honours for GB Women in US college action

Fri 7 Jun 2019

Two members of the GB Women’s Fastpitch Team that will be competing this summer for a place in the Tokyo Olympics were at the heart of the action as the US college softball season recently came to an end.

Georgina Corrick

GB pitcher Georgina Corrick, in her sophomore year at the University of South Florida, was rewarded for an outstanding season by being named as a Second Team All-American by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA).

Georgina was also named as the American Athletic Conference (AAC) Pitcher of the Year and a member of the All-Region Team and was a finalist for the USA Softball Player of the Year award.

She led the AAC in four major pitching categories: wins (25), ERA (1.14), strikeouts (260) and batting average against (.167) and was among the top 15 pitchers in NCAA Division 1 softball in three of those categories.

GB Women’s Fastpitch Team Head Coach Rachael Watkeys will be hoping that “George” can bring that form to the European Women’s Championship coming up in the Czech Republic and Poland from 30 June-6 July, and then to the Europe/Africa Olympic Qualifier, scheduled for 23-28 July in Utrecht in The Netherlands.

To gain a place in the Olympic Qualifier, GB will need to place in the top six at the European Championship, and to get to Tokyo, GB will need to win the eight-team Qualifier that will feature the top six teams in Europe plus South Africa and Botswana.

Alana Snow

Meanwhile, GB outfielder Alana Snow, in her sophomore year at UCLA, was able to share in the glory as her team won the College World Series on 4 June with a walk-off 5-4 win over the University of Oklahoma.

Alana had limited playing time with the best college team in the country this year, but will certainly have benefitted from her experiences this season as she makes her debut with the GB Senior Women’s Team after playing with every GB age-group team from the Under-16s through the Under-22s.

You can read daily reports on the GB Women’s Team at the Europeans and the Olympic Qualifier on this website.  Final games from the European Championship and all games from the Olympic Qualifier will be webstreamed (watch this website for details).
