GB pitcher Amie Hutchison beats #1 US Junior College team

GB Under-22 and Women’s Team pitcher Amie Hutchison threw one-hit softball over five strong innings as her Gulf Coast State Junior College softball team recorded a stunning 2-1 upset victory on 16 April over previously unbeaten Chipola, the top-ranked Division 1 junior college team in America.

Gulf Coast Head Coach Beth Wade decided to start Amie in the game instead of Gulf Coast’s #1 pitcher Chandler Sparkman because “we thought Chipola had seen her the least, and Amie keeps the ball lower in the zone.  Chandler gets it higher in the zone and the wind was blowing pretty hard.”

That decision paid off big-time for Gulf Coast as Amie recorded 10 ground-ball outs through four innings, yielding only a double to Chipola’s Alexis Grampp off the centre field fence in the top of the fourth.

Through five innings, Amie had matched Chipola all-American Krystal Goodman by allowing only one hit as the game remained scoreless.

In the top of the sixth, however, Chipola took the lead when their first two batters reached base on a ground ball through the hole and an infield hit.  Amie was relieved by Kristina Manthei, who got two outs on a double play before giving up an RBI single to Alexis Grampp.

But in the bottom of the seventh inning, Gulf Coast freshman Amanda Dermody won the game with a two-out two-run walk-off single.  Kristina Manthei got the win, but it was Amie Hutchison’s dominant five-plus innings that dethroned the top team in the junior college rankings.

Amie is also currently her team’s leading hitter with a .446 average, 15 doubles and 45 runs batted in, and has a 4-1 record as pitcher with an ERA of 2.26 in 43.1 innings.  When not pitching, Amie plays first base.

The summer, Amie will play for the new GB Under-22 Women’s Team at the European Under-22 Championship in Slovakia in July, and will be bidding for a place on the Senior Women’s Team for the ESF’s new Super 6 Tournament in the Netherlands in September.
