Euro selections made for GB Fastpitch Men

Mon 23 Apr 2018

GB Men’s Fastpitch Team Head Coach Kevin Stockford has announced the 17 players selected for the team that will compete at the European Men’s Championship from 25-30 June in Havlickuv Brod in the Czech Republic.

The GB Team will come into the competition as the fifth seed based on their result in this tournament two years ago, but will need to finish in one of the medal positions to qualify for the 2019 WBSC Men’s Fastpitch World Championship.  This competition will also be played in the Czech Republic – the first time a Men’s World Championship will have been staged in Europe.

To achieve this goal, but also with an eye on developing male fastpitch in the UK, Kevin Stockford has chosen a team split about evenly between veteran players based overseas and mainly young players who live and play in the UK.

The opposition

This year’s European Men’s Fastpitch Championship has the competition’s largest-ever entry, with 12 teams taking part.

GB is in Group A along with the defending champion Czech Republic, Belgium, Italy, Germany and Lithuania.

Group B will consist of Denmark, the Netherlands, Israel, Croatia, Sweden and Slovakia.

After the initial round-robin, the top three teams in each group will go forward to a second round-robin, followed by a third-place game and final (following the lead of the WBSC, the European Softball Federation has now eliminated the Page Playoff system from its tournaments).

Great Britain will open the tournament against Germany at 4.00 pm European time on Monday 25 June, and will then play Italy and the Czech Republic on Tuesday and Belgium and Lithuania on Wednesday.

BASU umpire David Hurley will be part of the umpiring crew for the tournament.
