Thursday 6 September – The London Meteors moved from first round pool games to the Placement playoff round at the European Men’s Super Cup in Prague today, but their luck hasn’t turned, as the team went down 12-1 in four innings  to Gladsaxe from Denmark.

After four shut-outs in their first five games, the Meteors were pleased to get a run on the board in this morning’s game, even if they only had one hit and the hit didn’t figure in their run.

The run was scored in the top of the third inning against Gladsaxe starter Lukas Lohmann and came about when Matt Tomlin walked, when to second on a wild pitch, took third on a passed ball and scored on another wild pitch.

The hit came in the top of the second inning, and was a lead-off single to left field by guest player Jorge Luis Giraut.

Apart from those two baserunners, the Meteors went up and down in order, with Lukas Lohmann striking out five in three innings of work.

Vaclav Sretr pitched the fourth inning for Gladsaxe and retired the Meteors on two pop outs and a groundout.

Meanwhile, Gladsaxe scored early and often against Meteors starter Josh Peat, with three runs in the bottom of the first inning and seven runs in the bottom of the second.  Gareth Jooste relieved Josh with two out in the second inning and allowed the Danes a final two runs in the bottom of the third.

Josh Peat only gave up six hits, but his downfall was nine walks in 1.2 innings.

Mikkel Anderson homered for Gladsaxe in the first inning and Jacob Mortenson added a three-run home run in the Danes’ seven-run second inning.

Looking ahead

Meteors have the rest of today off, and will play Cavigal Nice from France at 9.00 am Czech time on Friday morning.  If Meteors lose that game, their tournament is over, but if they win they will play again and if they keep winning, they’ll keep playing.

In fact, if Meteors go on a winning streak tomorrow, they could play four games in one day.  But no doubt, the team will cross that bridge when they come to it.
