The Brighton and Hove Softball League started up at the beginning of May with an expansion from four teams to seven, a new development league running concurrently with the main league and a grant from BaseballSoftballUK to redevelop the storied Pavilion Field baseball and softball complex.

Pavilion Field, built over 16 years ago as the home of the BBF's Brighton Buccaneers, has a rich history.  The Buccaneers were multiple National Champions, produced a string of GB players and reached the final of the European Cup in 2000.  At one point, the field was deemed to be one of the best in Europe.

John Foster, who played for the Buccaneers in 1997 while he was in college, made his Major League debut with the Atlanta Braves in 2002.

Refurbishment

Located in the picturesque Waterhall Valley, Pavilion Field was the site of the BBF's “Final 4” National Baseball Championships from 1999 through 2003.  Players could look out at cows grazing on the hills beyond the ballpark, and many people remember those "Finals 4s" with fond memories.

Now, the refurbishment project, involving baseball and softball players alike, is being spearheaded by Jon Sayers, who has secured financing and negotiated a new lease for the ground.

Early results

Meanwhile, in the Brighton and Hove Softball League, last year's winners Hove Tuesday have jumped out in front with a record of 2-0, followed by the Honey Badgers and Bright Sox at 1-1 and the Black Sox and Blaggards at 0-2.
