Young people in the Chiltern District will be encouraged to take up a new sport this summer when Chalfont Softball Club puts on a series of six Junior Softball Nights on Friday evenings during July and the first half of August, starting on 5 July, in an attempt to find the softball stars of the future.

Coaches from the club have been working over the past couple of months with boys from Dr Challoner’s School in Amersham and with girls from Challoners High School in Little Chalfont in a programme of six weekly after-school softball sessions, and have been impressed, not only by the enthusiasm of the 14-year-old students but by their thirst for the game and the potential that they have shown.

More sessions

“The students have really enjoyed the sessions and loved playing softball against other schools from around Buckinghamshire at last week’s Bucks School Games in Aylesbury,” said Neil Turner, a coach at Chalfont Softball Club.  “The school has asked us back to run more sessions, but it’s also really exciting to have many of the students sign up for our new Friday night junior sessions with the club.”

The six Friday evening sessions will take place on the playing fields at Challoners High School from 6.30-8.00 pm.  The sessions will be open to all young people between 12 and 16 years of age, regardless of previous softball experience.

Neil Turner said: “The sessions will be fun, with a mix of skills teaching, rules and games to apply what has been taught.  From what we’ve seen at the schools, attendees will progress quickly and there is no reason why they can’t start staking their claim to a place in our adult teams for future seasons.”
