GB Men’s Teams looking for new players for 2021

Wed 6 Jan 2021

All three GB Men's Fastpitch Teams -- Senior, Under-23 and Under-18 -- are looking for players interested in trialing for one or more of these squads in 2021.  All three teams are planning to play in European Championship or Qualifier tournaments this summer in the Czech Republic.

Any player based in Britain or overseas who wants to trial for any of these teams should start by completing the application form on this link -- https://forms.gle/Ue1b8jqnTz267upS7 -- as soon as possible.

You will be contacted shortly afterward by the appropriate Team Manager with information about trial arrangements, which will be finalised as soon as possible and will be based on government Covid regulations, which means that some trial elements may be remote.

GB Senior Men

The GB Senior Men's Team, currently ranked fourth in Europe, will be changing direction this year under a new Head Coach to be appointed shortly, with more emphasis on selecting, training and playing GB-based players, though overseas-based players are still welcome to trial and join the programme.

The team will travel to Ledenice in the Czech Republic to compete in the European Men's Fastpitch Championship from 21-26 June, with a training camp and hopefully friendly games in Europe before the tournament.

A total of 12 teams are currently entered in the competition -- the highest number ever, and a testament to the growing popularity of men's fastpitch in Europe -- and the hope is that the rollout of Covid vaccines over the next few months will mean that all or most of those teams can commit to the tournament.

GB Under-23 Men

The GB Under-23 Men's Team, the newest team in the GB Softball programme, was created in 2019 in response to a promise from Softball Europe to introduce this age category to its competitions.

Head Coach Ian Tomlin will take the team to its first-ever official international competition -- the European Under-23 Men's Qualifier -- to be played in Havlickuv Brod in the Czech Republic from 12-17 July, at the same time and location as the European Under-18 and Under-16 Men's Championships.  A training camp and hopefully friendly matches will precede the tournament.

This tournament is expected to qualify two European teams to compete in an Under-23 Men's World Cup in Argentina in 2022.  The number of entries has not yet been confirmed and will be announced by Softball Europe shortly, but the new GB Team has hopes of claiming one of those World Cup places.

The Under-23 Men’s Team will also  will also be playing in the Great Britain Fastpitch League (GBFL) at Farnham Park this year on dates between April and September, which will provide valuable opportunities to train and play together, competing against the GB Under-18 Team and men’s club teams from around the UK.

GB Under-18 Men

The GB Under-18 Men’s Fastpitch Team, currently ranked fifth in Europe, is looking for new players born between 2003 and 2007.  This is because, after the cancellation of all European competitions in 2020 due to Covid-19, a number of players have now aged out of the Under-18 bracket and become Under-23 players instead, so Head Coach Ian Tomlin is looking to add players to the Under-18 squad.

Ideally, players will have had some softball or baseball experience and be capable of taking part in a competitive softball game, but previous fastpitch experience is not a requirement.

The team plans to compete in the European Under-18 Men’s Championship in Havlickuv Brod from 12-17 July, with a training camp and friendly matches the week before,

Five teams have entered the competition, and the GB Team will be competing against the Czech Republic, Denmark, Israel and Croatia.

The Under-18 Men’s Team will also  will also be playing in the Great Britain Fastpitch League (GBFL) at Farnham Park this year, competing against the GB Under-23 Team and men’s club teams from around the UK.
