GB Fastpitch Teams seeking Sports Therapists

Fri 1 Jan 2021

The British Softball Federation is looking for two or three qualified Sports Therapists or Physiotherapists eager to work with the following national teams: our Under-15 Women’s Fastpitch Team and our Under-18, Under-23 and Senior Men’s Fastpitch Teams.

The role is voluntary, but all tournament expenses will be covered.  You will be the only therapist for a team of approximately 14-17 athletes, managing player injuries and injury prevention.

Successful applicants will be required to travel with their team for approximately two weeks during the summer of 2021, including a training camp and a competition overseas, with about three to five hours of admin work per week in the lead-up to the training camp and tournament.

At the competition, days will be long and busy and you will need to prioritise your time to fit in with athletes’ needs before and after games.  You will be inducted by Great Britain Softball’s lead therapist if selected to a post and she can provide support while on tour should the need arise.

There will be plenty of opportunity to become familiar with GB softball and the therapy team prior to the 2021 tournaments.

Postholder responsibilities

  • Lead team warm-ups and cool-downs.
  • Be the designated first aider during games.
  • Pre-game athlete preparation (strapping, taping etc).
  • Injury diagnosis, treatment and management/prevention.
  • Manage team recovery to sustain peak performance throughout the duration of the tournament.
  • Make informed decisions on athletes’ ability to play if injured or if concussion has been experienced.
  • Co-manage team nutrition (with the Head Coach and Team Manager), including pre-tour planning, and monitor hydration on tour.
  • Take the lead in communication with the UK Anti-Doping Association (UKAD) and WADA.  Ensure athletes are educated on doping protocols and assist where necessary with TUEs.
  • Manage the overall wellbeing of athletes (such as Covid wellness checks) and signpost to relevant colleagues as necessary.

Required experience

  • Qualification in Sports Science, Physiotherapy, Rehabilitation and accredited with affiliated national governing body (to provide at interview).
  • First aid and CPR certificate (to provide at interview).
  • Enhanced and in-date DBS.
  • Preferably have already worked with high-level athletes or, at minimum, have had two years’ experience with a sporting team.
  • Understanding of softball/baseball or other throwing sports and management of shoulder and upper limb injuries.
  • Experience with acute first aid during competition.
  • Basic sports nutrition knowledge.
  • Good time management skills and ability to multi-task.
  • Be willing to stay with the Great Britain Softball programme for a minimum of two years.

As noted above, chosen postholders will need to be available for a minimum of two weeks (one week training camp plus one week of competition), with the potential to be available for longer pending Covid restrictions.

Desired experience

  • Understanding or experience of concussion management.
  • Understanding of WADA and its list of banned substances, and experience of educating athletes on UKAD protocols.
  • Knowledge of exercise prescription and programming.
  • Ability to attend training sessions if new to the sport of softball/baseball to understand the game and its physical requirements.
