GB Fastpitch Teams checking in from the Canada Cup

Tue 9 Jul 2019

The Canada Cup features an International Division that regularly hosts some of the world’s top national teams, as well as Futures (Under-19) and Showcase (Under-16) Divisions for younger national, club and travel balls teams thereby providing GB teams with a first class competitive development opportunity in each division.

With head coach Robbie Robison unfortunately taken ill just before the departure date, team manager David Morris headed to Vancouver with a handful of U18 players to meet pitching coach Greg Seeley and get things under way.

More players arrived from other locations during the day, and practice began on July 4th in Surrey, British Columbia.  Greg led the coaching to great effect and quickly built a good team ethos in the group as assistant coach Tara Henry arrived the following night, followed by physio Sarah Cormack the next day.  With a now nearly complete staff roster, the team played out three scrimmages against good local teams at Sunnyside Park, Cloverdale Park and Sullivan Park.

The team are looking strong in several areas and highlights include an ‘over the fence’ 3 run homer from pitcher Megan Kyte; third baseplayer Diana Nisbett throwing out all three batters in a single inning and Esme Potter’s baserunning causing pandemonium for the opponents’ infields.  GB went without a win in their scrimmages, but as always, there are plenty positives to take and elements of the game to work on as the tour progresses.

Yesterday’s arrival of pitcher Hannah Edwards, having just helped her team win bronze medals at the European Championships in the Czech Republic and a chance for Olympic qualification later this month, is a huge boost for the squad and she will jump straight in as GB were set to take on Tri City Titans (15:30) and GA Power Demarini (20:30) at Softball City July 8th.
