GB Cadette Girls ready to take on Europe

Sat 20 May 2017

Selections have now been made for the GB Cadette (Under-16) Girls’ Fastpitch Team that will take on 11 other countries at the 2017 European Cadette Championship in Ostrava, Czech Republic from 10-15 July.

GB finished fourth at the last European Cadette Championship, played in Sardinia in 2015, and as a result will be one of the top seeds in a tournament that will start with four round-robin groups of three teams each before moving to an eight-team playoff round and then to Page playoffs.

In the initial round-robin, GB will play France and Serbia in Pool D.

Other countries competing will be the Czech Republic, Germany and Slovakia in Pool A; Italy, Belgium and the Netherlands in Pool B; and Russia, Ukraine and Poland in Pool C.

Players and staff

It has been a long selection process, and difficult choices have had to be made from among a number of talented players, but GB Under-16 Head Coach Johanna Malisani has now announced that the following athletes have been selected to represent Great Britain and the British Softball Federation at the tournament:

Ivy Clark
Elise Coulthard
Hannah Edwards
Eliza Esiri
Caitlin Frank
Kira Kenny
Jasmine Lee-Tin
Glenys McGuire
Diana Nisbett
Esme Potter
Emily Rosindell
Michelle Shaw
Rose Taylor-Bhanji
Jessica Woodhams

This is an entirely new squad of players, as everyone who competed in the 2015 European Cadette Championship has aged out of the Under-16 bracket.  Four players from that squad were members of last year’s European Champion GB Under-19 Team, and several players on this year’s Cadette Team have moved up from the GB Under-13s.

The staff for the tournament will be:

Head Coach:  Johanna Malisani
Assistant Coaches:  Joss Thompson, Moe Flett and Sian Wigington
Team Manager:  Leah Holmes
Physiotherapist:  Edwin Lam

Travel plans

The team will travel to Ostrava on 6 July, where they will hold a three-day training camp prior to beginning tournament play, where, according to Johanna Malisani, “we will play with GB pride and heart!”

GB’s opening game at the Arrows Ostrava Baseball and Softball Club will be against France at 9.00 am on Monday 10 July, and the team will then play Serbia at 2.00 pm.  The schedule after that is dependent on results.

Reports from all GB games at the European Cadette Championship will be published on the BSF website, and some games from the tournament will be webstreamed (details to follow).

How does one become a part of this team. Do you tryout? What is the level of play? What is the speed of the fast pitch?
