BSF Executive Meeting Report: 6 December 2018

Sun 9 Dec 2018

The BSF Executive held its latest monthly conference call meeting on the evening of Thursday 6 December.  Below is a journalistic report on the main discussions and decisions.

Present:  Jenny Fromer (President), Laura Burkhardt (Treasurer), Liz Graham (Competitions Director), Mike Jennings (General Officer).

Apologies:  Stella Ackrell (Administrator), Steve Getraer (General Officer), Chris Moon (BASU Representative).

Guest:  Bob Fromer (BSUK).

2018-19 Budget

Much of the meeting was taken up with a detailed discussion of the BSF’s budget for 2018-19, which will be finalised by the Executive in January and presented to the 2019 BSF AGM in February for approval, along with the 2017-18 accounts.

The BSF is considering several new areas for spending next year, including redevelopment of the Federation’s website and enhanced webstreaming of BSF competition events, and squeezing all this into the budget while retaining the required level of reserves will require further consideration.

Confirmation of Head Coach appointment

The BSF Executive, following the recommendation of the GB Management Committee, has confirmed the appointment of Ian Tomlin as the new Head Coach of the GB Under-19 Men’s Fastpitch Team.  Over the next two years, this will become an Under-18 Team to conform to new competition age groups established by the World Baseball Softball Confederation and the European Softball Federation.

Ian has been the Team Manager for the Under-19 Men for a number of years but has moved gradually into more of a coaching role, and has coached GB Select Men’s Teams at invitational tournaments and this year coached the Meteors Team at the European Men’s Super Cup.

The GB Management Committee is looking to fill vacancies for Team Managers for the GB Under-19 Men (because Ian has moved over to the Head Coach role) as well as the GB Under-18 and GB Under-16 Women’s Teams.  Anyone interested in applying or finding out more should email

New date for third round of NSL 1

Although it remains to be confirmed at the European Softball Federation Congress in February, it now seems likely that Hungary will host the 2019 European Co-ed Slowpitch Championship from 15-20 July in Budapest.

This will conflict with the third round of NSL competition at Diamond Series 3, scheduled for the weekend of 20-21 July, and would clearly pose a problem for a number of NSL 1 teams who would have key players away with GB Slowpitch.

One option that the BSF is exploring to solve this problem is to hold the Diamond 3 NSL 1 competition as a stand-alone tournament at Farnham Park on the following weekend, 27-28 July.

Video on head injuries

BSF General Officer Mike Jennings recently attended a seminar on head injuries at the British Standards Institute, which included a video on the recovery process from a serious head injury sustained by the former British Olympian James Cracknell.

The BSF is already planning to hold a webinar on concussion at its 2019 AGM in February, and may add this video to the presentation.

Next meeting

The next BSF conference call meeting will be held on the evening of Thursday 10 January 2019.
