Two three-hour modular courses open to all slowpitch coaches and players – one on slowpitch pitching and the other on drills for beginner coaches -- will be delivered in London on Sunday 12 May by GB Slowpitch Assistant Coach David Lee.

Both courses will take place at Park Academy West London, Park View Road, Uxbridge UB8 3GA.

The module on slowpitch pitching will run from 10.00 am-1.00 pm, and the module on drills will run from 1.30-4.30 pm.

The cost to attend each module for anyone not already taking a BaseballSoftballUK Level 2 coaching course will be £35.

These two modular courses, part of BaseballSoftballUK’s menu of short courses for coaches and players, were first run in Manchester on 23 March.

Slowpitch Pitchers Course

The three-hour slowpitch pitching module is aimed at coaches as well as new and experienced slowpitch pitchers, and will cover all aspects of pitching including different grips, pitches and pitching styles along with pitching strategy and fielding responsibilities.

For coaches, the course will provide practical ideas on how to work with and improve the pitchers they coach, based on an understanding of what Great Britain Slowpitch looks for and implements when developing slowpitch pitchers.

The course will show coaches how to improve their players’ pitching technique and how to safely introduce beginners to slowpitch pitching.

By the end of the course, learners will be able to:

  • Explain the basic mechanics of the slowpitch pitching delivery.
  • Teach forward spin, reverse spin and the knuckle ball.
  • Identify and correct common mistakes in the pitching delivery.
  • Utilise drills to develop pitchers further.

Drills for Beginner Coaches

This module will provide coaches with new and engaging drills to run with participants at all skill levels.  It is a great introduction to coaching for those who haven't had much experience and will be based on the fundamentals of what Great Britain Baseball and Softball teach at multiple positions.

The course is particularly aimed at people who are new to coaching slowpitch softball and at existing coaches looking for a sound understanding of basic fundamentals and new drills to reinforce key points.

By the end of the course, learners will be able to understand what makes a drill successful and enjoyable for players and be able to deliver safe and engaging drills for players at all grades of play.

Specifically, the course will include a variety of drills to enable coaches to teach throwing and catching skills, techniques for fielding ground balls and fly balls and to develop hitting skills.

Many of these drills are adaptable for indoor and outdoor environments.

Basics

Those who attend either module should bring a pen and notepad as well as a glove and bat (if you have one) and wear appropriate shoes for practical activity.
