Bridget Cameron, a BASU umpire who relocated from Brisbane, Australia to Edinburgh at the end of 2013, has been selected to represent Great Britain as an umpire at the 11th WBSC Junior Women’s Fastpitch World Championships in Oklahoma City, USA in August.

The GB Under-19 Women’s Team will be competing in the tournament, attempting to better their ninth-place finish at their first-ever World Championship appearance in Canada in 2013.

Bridget Cameron obtained her ISF qualification in Christchurch, New Zealand in February 2014, but this will be her first appearance as an umpire at a World Championship competition.

Bridget said: “I was so excited and honoured to be selected as a GB umpire.  I am truly appreciative of all the support from GB Softball and BASU.”

Experience

Bridget has been a fastpitch umpire for 21 years and has enjoyed umpiring in the Great Britain Fastpitch League since she came to the UK.  While she is located well away from London and the South East, where most domestic fastpitch competition takes place, she has managed to travel far and wide to ensure her skills and experiences continue to develop, including accepting an invitation to umpire at the German National Junior Championships in June 2014.

“I am conscious that you are only as good as your last game,” Bridget said, “so I am always looking to umpire quality games to continue with my self-development.”

She has also converted to slowpitch umpiring.  “I really enjoy both forms of the game,” Bridget said, “because at the end of the day, you are still using the same umpiring principles.”

When asked about the future, Bridget said: “I hope to return from the Worlds to share my knowledge and experience with my fellow BASU umpires.”  With the softball season about to kick off in Britain, Bridget is “really looking forward to the 2015 season and getting back to the diamond.”
