Volunteers needed for 2018 World Series

Fri 10 Nov 2017

The BSF is looking for volunteers to help with the 2018 Softball World Series Tournament, including minibus drivers, people to help set up fields on the afternoon before the event and people to run Tournament Control.

The World Series is one of the most popular tournaments of the British softball season and will be celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2018.

The World Series will take place on the weekend of 8-9 September next year at the Imperial College Heston Venue (formerly the BA Concorde Club) in Cranford, near Heathrow Airport.

Despite the tournament being around 10 months away, the BSF is keen to line up volunteers for the event now, since those people who have run the tournament in recent years and carried out the roles described below will not be available.

Drivers

The World Series always features 18 teams, with between six and eight teams flying in from various countries around Europe to take part.  This reflects the BSF's aim of using the tournament to help develop slowpitch in Europe.

Transport is provided for these teams from the tournament hotel to the venue, and so two drivers qualified to drive a 17-seat minibus are needed over the weekend of the tournament to carry out this function.

Drivers who obtained an ordinary driving licence in 1997 or earlier, and are less than 70 years old, are automatically qualified to drive this type of minibus.  Otherwise, a minibus test needs to have been taken and passed.

Set-up

The World Series is played on six excellent grass fields at the Heston Venue, but outfield and backstop fences need to be set up on those fields on the Friday afternoon before the tournament.

A team of up to four volunteers would make this a relatively quick and painless operation.

Tournament Control

Two people are needed to carry out the usual Tournament Control functions over the weekend, including collecting and recording scores, dealing with questions, working with the umpires in case of a rain delay, keeping rubbish collection and control in hand and helping at the Closing Ceremony.

It would be useful -- but not essential -- to have volunteers with some previous Tournament Control experience.

Reimbursement

Any expenses incurred in connection with carrying out any of these volunteer roles will be reimbursed by the BSF, and it is possible that a small honorarium for carrying out these roles can be paid.
