Success for Indoor Single-Sex League in Manchester

Thu 29 Nov 2018

A six-week Single-Sex Indoor Softball League that began on 21 October in Manchester finished its autumn season on 25 November and was clearly a great success.

Based at Powerleague Trafford, the league consisted of three male and three female teams, with each team playing 24 games across the season, during which a total of 1,930 runs were scored!

Competition

For games to be competitive, it was important that the teams were evenly matched, and results showed that this aim was achieved -- particularly in the Women’s League where just two points separated first and second place.

Organisers added a fun element by hanging a 1x1m target banner in the home run zone on each pitch and awarded the first player to hit it each week with a pair of BSUK batting gloves.  This gave all those super-competitive players another goal and was fantastic target practice!

Winning teams were each awarded a £40 drinks voucher for the Salutation pub in Manchester – a prize kindly donated by Ian Blease -- as well as winner’s trophies, beer and chocolate.

All six teams have already signed up for the 2019 league, which will run for at least four weeks starting on Sunday 6 January.  There are spaces for one more men’s team and one more women’s team to enter, which will bring the total number to eight teams across the two leagues.

Luis Arrevillagas, BaseballSoftballUK Development manager for the North West, said, “This single-sex league is one of the most exciting projects I’ve been involved with.  It may look easy from the outside but it had been brewing for a few years and suddenly the opportunity came along.  Then all those amazing captains pulled together and everything fell into place in less than 24 hours.  Six weeks later we have plenty of happy players who have now experienced single-sex Indoors for the first time ever!”

Linni Mitchell, BSUK North West Coach said, “Thanks to all the dedicated captains who put teams together and to everyone who has been so supportive of this league.  The feedback has been really positive and we are happy to give the opportunity to play single-sex indoor softball to all of the players in the league.

“Congratulation to league winners Mavs and Show Us Your Hits,” Linni added, “and good luck holding on to the top spot when the league resumes in the new year!”

If you have a single-sex team that would like to join the new indoor season that will begin in January 2019, please contact Luis Arrevillagas for more details.
