GB moves up in women’s world rankings

Tue 18 Dec 2018

The World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC) has unveiled baseball and softball's first-ever dedicated world rankings web platform, and the latest results show that Great Britain has moved up two places to 12th in the Women’s Softball rankings.

GB is now ranked just behind New Zealand, the Netherlands and Italy, and just ahead of the Philippines, Brazil, the Czech Republic and Venezuela.

This follows the 11th place finish by the GB Women’s Team at the Women’s World Championship in Japan this past summer, where they beat both the Philippines and Venezuela, and solid performances in European competitions by women’s age group teams.

A record number of 67 countries are now listed in the women's world rankings, with Bolivia, Indonesia, Lesotho, Malaysia and Zimbabwe gaining world ranking points for the first time.

The GB Men’s Fastpitch Team finished fourth at the European Men’s Championship this past summer and just missed out on a World Championship place, but the GB Men’s programme has moved down one place and is now ranked 14th in the world.

Many functions

The world rankings website can be found at, and features functions such as tracking, trends, top climbers, charts, country-by-country comparisons, ranking by continent and points earned by each National Team/Federation per competition.

Tracking of the WBSC world rankings is available dating back to the inception of the baseball world rankings in 2009 and the launch of the softball world rankings in 2016.

WBSC President Riccardo Fraccari said: "Today marks a major milestone, as the baseball and softball world rankings web platform is now among the biggest of any sport.  WBSC is proud to unveil this new innovative service for the worldwide baseball-softball community.  The world rankings are among WBSC's top generators of traffic as well as media and fan engagement.”
