BSF Executive Meeting Report: 5 April 2018

Mon 23 Apr 2018

The BSF Executive held its latest monthly conference call meeting on the evening of Thursday 5 April.  Below is a journalistic report on discussions and decisions.

Present:  Jenny Fromer (President), Stella Ackrell (Administrator), Liz Graham (Competitions Director), Mike Jennings (General Officer), Steve Getraer (General Officer).

Apologies:  Bob Fromer (BSUK).

The BSF has agreed to commit money for event coverage this year – primarily to ensure that reports on GB Softball Teams in international competition can be created and posted on the BSF website.

The Executive also agreed to award a development grant of £125 – provided the Greater London Softball Mixed League will match it – to allow a new GBSML team, the Beavers, to purchase equipment for the coming season.

National Championships and tournaments

BSF Competitions Director Liz Graham reported that men’s places for the Single-Sex Slowpitch National Championships, scheduled for the weekend of 30 June-1 July in Birmingham, are already full, with about half the available places still remaining for women’s teams.

Looking ahead to 2019, there is a strong possibility that Major League Baseball games will be played in London on the weekend when the Single-Sex Nationals would normally be held, and if this is confirmed, then the BSF will move the Single-Sex Nationals, probably to a weekend in June.

The BSF will also ask the Windsor Invitational Tournament and Diamond Series 3 to switch weekends in 2019 and beyond to avoid a clash between Diamonds 3 and European club competitions.

The BSF is making plans to enhance Co-ed National Championships this year.  Additional features to be provided are likely to include scoreboard operators, equipment suppliers on site, commissioned photography, event-specific bannering and possibly webstreaming from the final day of the NSL Nationals.

Additional possibilities are an enhanced children’s play area near the Home Plate clubhouse and the creation of BSF and GB Softball merchandise for sale at the events.

The Executive also discussed a member suggestion that bleachers be installed for Co-ed Nationals tournaments.  The decision was not to do this as a one-off, but the BSF will consider contributing if BaseballSoftballUK is prepared to install new bleachers for the season.

GB v Ireland Challenge

BaseballSoftballUK, working with the BSF and Softball Ireland, has arranged a challenge match between the GB and Ireland Slowpitch National Teams, to be played during the Windsor Invitational Tournament at Farnham Park on Saturday 14 July.

This game is projected as the first step in setting up regular challenge games between GB and Ireland in all three formats: baseball, slowpitch and fastpitch.

Website review

The BSF is planning to upgrade its website in conjunction with BaseballSoftballUK, and a working group from the BSF Executive has been formed to get the process started consisting of Jenny Fromer, Stella Ackrell and Liz Graham.

A conference call for the group will take place soon to map out the BSF’s key requirements, and BSUK will then research and cost various options.

BSF video

The BSF is interested in producing a promotional video for slowpitch softball to attract new participants, and will shortly be developing a brief and seeking quotes from production companies.

University development in Scotland

BaseballSoftballUK has suggested that a Scottish University Officer may be created to further the development of softball at Scottish universities.

The growth of university softball in England has led to many university players and sometimes teams crossing over to play in BSF leagues, and the hope is that the same effect can bolster recruitment for leagues in Edinburgh and Glasgow.

BaseballSoftballUK Committee meetings

Members of the BSF Executive attend meetings of the BaseballSoftballUK Board and its various Committees, and reports from these meetings are a standing item on the agenda at BSF Executive meetings.

Jenny Fromer reported on items considered at a BSUK Board meeting on 12 March, which included notification that BaseballSoftballUK will go out to tender for insurance cover in 2018.

There was also discussion of a new BSUK Commercial Plan that will go into effect when a new staff member, with the title Head of Commercial, takes up the post at the end of April or early in May.

The 2018-19 budget for BSUK was presented and improved.  It is a break-even budget based on conservative income projections.

Next meeting

The next BSF Executive meeting will be held on Thursday 10 May.
