BSF Executive Meeting Report: 13 June 2019

Mon 17 Jun 2019

The BSF Executive held its latest monthly conference call meeting on the evening of 13 June 2019.  Below is a journalistic report on discussions and decisions.

Attendance

Present:  Jenny Fromer (President), Bob Fromer (Administrator), Liz Graham (Competitions Officer), Fiona Kielthy (General Officer).

Apologies:  Laura Burkhardt (Treasurer), Alexis Markham-Hill (National Teams Officer), Mike Jennings (General Officer), Stella Ackrell (General Officer), Chris Moon (BASU Representative).

National Championships

Fiona Kielthy, who is organising this year’s Single-Sex Slowpitch Nationals and League Slowpitch Nationals, reported that everything is in place for the Single-Sex Nationals on 22-23 June in Birmingham, where there will be a full complement of 32 teams.  A preview of the event can be found on the BSF website here

The BSF has decided – and the teams will be informed – that points will be deducted if any team forfeits a round-robin game during the tournament.  A penalty may also be assessed if a team forfeits a playoff placing game, but this will be open to discussion.

Fiona also reported that 16 teams have committed so far to the Co-ed Slowpitch League Nationals at Farnham Park on 10-11 August, which means that eight places are still open.  The BSF will review the position in July.

National Softball League

An NSL 1 player recently submitted a proposal to the BSF for two changes in NSL play, including at National Championships, both intended to speed up games and allow more innings to be played:

  1. When an over-the-fence home run is hit, rather than circle the bases, the batter should simply touch first base and return to the dugout; any runners on base when the home run is hit should just return to the dugout after it clears the fence.

  2. All at-bats should start with a 1-and-1 count.

The BSF polled all NSL1 and NSL2 teams on these proposals, and there was overwhelming support for the first one and very little support for the second one.

The BSF will, accordingly, make the first proposal part of NSL rules starting in 2020, and will inform teams, BASU and the Diamond Series organisers in due course.

Registration question

The BSF has been approached by a current player asking about the possibility of adding “Non-Binary” to the registration options on the BSF website alongside “Male” and “Female”.

There is currently a trial going on around this question in the Greater London Softball Mixed League, and the BSF would like to consider this request in light of the trial outcome and consult with BSUK’s LGBT Panel, as there is a possibility that other rule changes may need to follow.

However, the issue will be addressed and resolved before next season.

Can non-affiliated leagues be represented on the BSF website?

The BSF has a policy of only including affiliated leagues in the Leagues section on the BSF website and on the Diamond Finder tool on the website Home Page.

However, the Bristol Softball Association has asked whether a page and Diamond Finder reference can be created for the Clifton Softball League, a long-standing social league that has a symbiotic relationship with the BSA and has been a starting point for many BSA players, though it has never affiliated its teams to the BSF.

The Executive will consider this request more fully at its next meeting in July.

Olympic policies

As part of the Terms and Conditions arising from the UK Sport Aspiration Fund grant to the GB Women’s Fastpitch Team, the BSF has published a set of relevant policies on the BSF website here

Two of these policies – the BaseballSoftballUK Whistle-Blowing Policy and the BaseballSoftballUK Anti-Bribery, Fraud and Corruption Policy – were adopted in full at this meeting as BSF policies.

Next meeting

The next BSF Executive conference call meeting will be on Thursday 11 July 2019.

Anyone with topics or issues to raise at that meeting should contact BSF Administrator Bob Fromer
