British mixed fastpitch team will head to Paris this weekend

Thu 28 Sep 2017

A mixed fastpitch team made up of players from a number of GB teams will head to Paris for the weekend of 30 September 1 October to take part once again in the annual Tournoi de Fleur.

This tournament is a memorial event held in honour of Fleur Edgerton-Meyer, a former player and coach for the French club team BAT Paris and a former GB Women’s Team player who started her softball career as a slowpitch player in the London Advertising League.

This trip follows a very successful weekend in Nottingham on 23-24 September for the GB Under-19 Men’s Team, which consisted of a full day of training and then a day of competition in the final event of the Nottingham Single Sex Slowpitch Series where the team finished fourth, their best position of the series.

Strong squad

This will be the fourth time a squad made up of GB players has attempted to win the popular Paris tournament, led by GB Under-19 Men’s Team Manager Ian Tomlin.  Over the past three years the British team has finished fourth twice and were runners-up last year.

This year, a squad has been selected to try to win the event, which is seen as an ideal development tournament for GB players.

The squad will once again be captained by GB Men’s Team player and Under-19 Men’s Assistant Coach Josh Peat, who will play a key role as the number one pitcher.

Josh will be supported by seven players from the GB Under-19 Men’s Team, six of whom played in the European Junior Men’s Championship in Prague this past summer, including up-and-coming pitcher Oliver Howley.

The female side of the team will include two GB Women’s Team players in Amy Wells and Nicole Ratel, and two players who were part of this summer’s successful GB Under-16 Girls’ Team in Eliza Esiri and Glenys McGuire.

Ian Tomlin said, “The main challenge in the competition will come from the Belgium team Namur and the Parisian side BAT Paris.  Both teams have quality pitchers who will provide a good test for our young players.”
