Archway School wins 2017 Gloucestershire School Games

Sat 17 Jun 2017

Hartpury College in Gloucestershire once again hosted the finals of the Gloucestershire School Games softball competition on Thursday 15 June, and after a hard day’s play, it was Archway School from Stroud that emerged victorious to retain their title from the previous summer.

Ten schools, two each from the five School Games Organiser areas, entered the 2017 County Softball Finals under clear skies, and were split into two pools of five teams each for an initial round-robin.

Pool A

In Pool A, Archway 2 set the early pace with a convincing 8-1 win over Gloucester Academy, but their success wasn’t to last.

Chosen Hill opened with a win and a draw in their first two matches, while Wyedean began with wins over Gloucester Academy and then Archway 2.

Dene Magna were also competitive, overcoming Archway 2 by 9-3 in their final group match, although earlier defeats to Chosen Hill and Wyedean left them in fourth place.

A one-run victory for Wyedean over Chosen Hill in the last pool match left them top the group.

Final group standings were:

Wyedean 4 0 0 12
Chosen Hill 2 1 1 9
Archway 2 1 2 1 7
Dene Magna 1 2 1 7
Gloucester Academy 1 2 1 6

Pool B

Over in Pool B, things were a little clearer as it emerged that Archway 1 and Farmors would be the teams to beat.

Early victories for Farmors over Pittville, Lakers and Severn Vale saw them take control of the group, but then consecutive wins for Archway 1 over the same opposition left them tied with Farmors after each team had played three games.

In what proved to be the decisive match, Archway 1 turned on the style to power past Farmors 8-0 and top the group.  Lakers overcame Pittville by a single run to secure third place in the table.

Final group standings were:

Archway 1 4 0 0 12
Farmors 3 1 0 10
Lakers 2 2 0 8
Severn Vale 1 3 0 6
Pittsville 0 4 0 4

In the playoffs, Pittville secured their first victory of the day, beating Gloucester Academy in the ninth-place match, while Dene Magna powered past Severn Vale to finish seventh.

Archway 2 took the fifth place playoff match by a single run and Farmors maintained their good form by beating Chosen Hill in the third place game.

That left Archway 1 and Wyedean to battle it out in the final.

Batting first, Archway 1 was limited to four runs, leaving the game wide open as Wyedean came to the plate.  But in a great defensive display, Archway limited Wyedean to only a single run and by doing so retained their crown.

The event was ably umpired by blues from the Bristol Softball association, and thanks goes to them for their support of the event.

Final standings

1 – Archway 1
2 – Wyedean
3 – Farmors
4 – Chosen Hill
5 – Archway 2
6 – Lakers
7 – Dene Magna
8 – Severn Vale
9 – Pittville
10 – Gloucester Academy
